- In a previous article, kbull@garlic.com (Greg Thomson) says:
-
- >Ok, here is why I think Amigas, includeing my A1200 with a 50 Mhz 030 and
- >16 megs of ram suck:
-
- Send it my way please, I've got a ton of friends who want it.
-
- >1. Good and fast browsers do not exist
-
- The end of the month something called Ibrowse will make it's way to the
- net, beta of this browser has already stirred comments.

-
- True 24 bit boards with enough memory to handle the 24 million colours in
- a realistic resolution are still expensive (and about the same here).
-
- >3. Amigas are expensive
-
- So are Compaq's, IBM's and any name brand machine. It's the thieving
- clones you're talking about with companies that are formed overnight with
- stolen technology, designs and configurations... they don't pay for R&D
- or hire any of your country's designers. Good way to kill off your high
- tech industry and give the thieves the power of your future.
-
- >4. They are not that easy to upgrade. Try adding a graphics card to an A1200
-
- I doesn't need one. It's all in the box, thankfully. The A4000T with
- slots fills some needs.
-
- >5. They do not have a PCI bus
-
- Right.. It's a different machine designed when PCI was just an idea.
-
- >6. There is no memory protection
-
- I have never seen the need for it... are you just parroting other minds?
-
- >7. Most games only run in 15 Khz mode because DBLNtsc is slow
-
- Great to have buddies over and play double player games on a 36" TV
-
- >8. Amiga games suck compared to the onse in the PC world
-
- Another Doom fanatic? The mind is a terrible thing to waste.
-
- >9. Sound on Amigas is very poor and 16 bit cards are too expensive (14 bit
- > is not that great)
-
- Not from my perspective, hooked up to a reasonable stereo it makes most
- versions of the sound blaster sound tinny, but there is pro level cards
- for those who have a career in mind.
-
- >Here is why I think Amigas are good
-
- Few enough reasons to sell your system to me for $50..
-
- >1. Good multitasking
- >2. Operating system does not waste resources like memory and processor
- >3. A lot of free software
- >4. Cool graphics programs ( which are now appearing on PC's)
-
- Go for it.!
-
- >By the way Windows 95 is not that bad. Windows NT is very good. Networking on
- >PC's is very nice. Netscape is very fast in Windows 95 and Windows NT. Oh,
- >and lets see
-
- Ever run Netscape on ShapeShifter?
-
- >1. Pentium mother board with 2 EIDE controllers, 2 serial, 2 parelel,
- > 256K cache, upgradable for pipeline cache: $168
-
- SCSI is stock on some Amiga's and extra ports are in the same range.
-
- >2. Pipline cache 8ns: $45
-
- Not really applicable.
-
- >3. Segate EIDE 1.08 G HD: $208 (single platter, 10.5 ms, 256K)
-
- Cheap drive, the new SCSI's are nicer and more reliable.
-
- >4. Dimond 3D Edge PCI video/sound card with 2 megs DRAM: $300
-
- Again.. extras. I must admit it's nice to have someone else do your R&D
- and AT has been talking about PCI, but I've never really filled my slots.
-
- >5. Mini tower case: $33
-
- Take too much room on my desktop, either a full floor tower or pizza box
- under the monitor is desirable.
-
- >6. 16 megs of ram 60 ns: $408
-
- Ya and you need too.. I'm reasonably happy with 6 but would take what
- ever is offered.
-
- >7. Pentium 120: $300
-
- You gotta see all these nickle & dime pruchases.... hope they don't screw ya.
-
- >8. 3.5 Floppy: $25
-
- You still use one?
-
- >9. 6x CD Rom: $148
-
- It's a bit more here in Canada.
-
- >Total (withought a monitor and a modem): $1627 plus tax
- >If you think this price is too good to be true look in the latest issue
- >of Microtimes and shop around a little. I will keep my A1200 for a while
- >but my next computer will not be an Amiga unless AT keeps all of its
- >promisses and lowers the price to match PCs.
-
- It's typical, don't count on any quality here.. A better PC Clone is
- around $3000 and name brand versions are as high as $10,000. I can tell
- you don't use your machine for much real effort and want to be a DOOM
- player soon. Amiga's are for a different client who see's entertainment
- in a platform that has the diversity of software, a variety of interests,
- a thinking person who likes to have a tool in his future that allows
- flexablity without a major investment mortgage.
